12/6/13-A Us and Them

Since the world is made up of two groups and only two, Us and Them, I’ll bet you’re one of US.

US in this case is those in a hate-hate relationship with our cell phone carriers.

Especially those of US with a contract that exceeds our life expectancy.

So when we get email from our’s it immediately raises red flags.

In the email the other day, this come-on.  It said
“You have EARNED a new phone.”

Earned?  How?  By paying on time and in full for the last umpteen years?  By climbing cell towers and fixing broken connections?

Or is it simply a way for the carrier to get rid of a certain breed of pesky and unwanted customer, those of us grandfathered into unlimited data.

Today, most of them charge by the molecule.  Use up your allotment and they start charging you more. And more and more.

The only way they can get out of that is by “upgrading” you.  When you upgrade, an almost meaningless idea, you lose your original plan and, of course, they no longer have one exactly like it.

Even if your contract has expired and you’re paying month-to-month, they can’t kick you out of unlimited.

You have to upgrade.  And when you buy a new phone, that’s an upgrade.  Even if you don’t pay for the actual telephone.

Earned an upgrade.  What a concept.  A flashy new phone to reprogram all you email, web link and social media accounts, your skype, your games.

By the time you do that, you’ve used up your month’s allotment of molecules and the meter starts running.

Given all that, maybe you should leave your earnings on the table.

As Kenny Rogers said: You gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em learn when to walk away, learn when to run.

It’s time to run.

I’m Wes Richards.  My opinions are my own but you’re welcome to them. (R)
